Forma přítomného prostého času

  • kromě 3. osoby jednotného času je u všech osob základní tvar slovesa (infinitivní tvar)
  • ve 3. osobě se přidává k základnímu tvaru koncovka -s nebo -es
    • I speak
    • you speak
    • he, she speaks
    • we speak
    • you speak
    • they speak
    Slovesa, u kterých se přidává koncovka -es:
    • go - goes
    • do - does
    • have - has
    • všechna slovesa končící sykavkou (s, ss, x, sh, tch), např. kiss - kisses, watch - watches
    Pro zápor, otázku a krátkou odpověď použijeme pomocné sloveso DO, ve 3. osobě j. č. DOES:
  • They live in Prague. - They do not/don't live in Prague. - Do they live in Prague? Yes, they do. / No, they don't.
  • He speaks French. - He does not/doesn't speak French. - Does he speak French? Yes, he does. / No, he doesn't.

    • Použití přítomného času prostého

    • Present Simple expresses state (stav):
      • We live in London
      • How many languages does he know?
    • It expresses so called eternal truth (stálá pravda, fakta, fyzikální zákony apod.):
      • Two and five makes seven.
      • Rome stands on the River Tibet.
    • Present Simple is also used in sports commentaries, demonstrations or in other forms of declaration (sportovní komentáře, postupy - např. recepty nebo jiné formy projevu):
      • I put the cake-mixture into this bowl and add a drop of vanilla essence.
      • I say that you are wrong
      • I give you my word.
