Verbs
the verb stands alone (= it doesn’t have any object) – intransitive verb
Phrasal Verbs- examples of intransitive verbs (in dictionaries they are marked I): The vase is broken. My friend arrived.
- examples of transitive verbs (in dictionaries they are marked T): He looked at me. The team still hasn’t scored.
- Some verbs have two objects – indirect (the person who receives) and direct (the thing that is bought, given etc.).
The indirect object usually comes first.
- give sb st – indirect + direct(He gave her the books)
give st to sb – direct + preposition to + indirect (He gave the books to his mother)
A phrasal verb is a verb + particle. A particle can be either a preposition or an adverb.
There are 4 types of phrasal verbs
Verbs that are not used in continuous form- verb + particle
- sit down, stand up
- look after sb, look for st:
- Can you look after my cat?, Can you look after him?
- try st on, put st out:
- Can I try the coat on? OR Can I try on the coat BUT Can I try it on? (if the object is pronoun, it must go ONLY between the two parts of the phrasal verb)
- look forward to st, get on with sb:
- She doesn’ get on with him well.
